Jackets Fall to Gamecocks

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to face the South Carolina Gamecocks in a rematch of the last three SELC championship games.

The Jackets struck first when DJ Louis found the back of the net down alley.  That would be the only goal of the first quarter.

Joseph Rose scooped up a loose ball on the crease and scored to put the Jackets ahead by two.  The Gamecocks got on the board shortly thereafter.  On the ensuing faceoff, Brooks Baro found Rose on the crease for his second goal of the game.  The Gamecocks scored the next five goals before the Jackets scored the final goal of the half to bring the score to 6-4.

Asher Wagnon scored the opening goal of the second half and drew a two minute non-releasable penalty.  Pierce Quarles found Joseph Rose for a goal to tie the game just as the penalty expired.  The Gamecocks would score the next two goals to once again take a two goal lead.  Andrew Belli scored after beating his man from behind to cut the lead in half.  Rose scored on another extra man opportunity to tie the game again.  South Carolina scores the final two goals of the frame and the teams entered the fourth quarter in the same situation as halftime with the Gamecocks up by two.

The Gamecocks opened the fourth quarter scoring to stretch the lead to three.  Rose responded again to cut the lead to two.  Pierce Quarles scored off a feed from Belli to being the Jackets within one.  The Gamecocks would score the next three goals  to extend the lead to 14-10.  The Jackets would continue to fight but just could not make up the necessary ground to earn the win.  The Gamecocks were able to close out the game with a 16-13 victory.

The Jackets will now host the Georgia Bulldogs next weekend for Senior Day and Founder's Day celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Georgia Tech lacrosse team.
