Jackets Hold Off Tigers

Jackets Hold Off Tigers

In their first home game of the season the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Auburn Tigers 16-11.  The Tigers drew first blood in the matchup of ranked teams after the Auburn goalie turned away a quality shot from the Jackets on the opening possession of the game.  The Jackets answered back with a goal of their own when Pierce Quarles fed Joseph Rose.  The Tigers retook the lead  when they scored as the shot clock expired.  The Jackets tied the game when Rose and Quarles reversed roles as Rose found Quarles for a step down shot that made its way past the Auburn goalie.  The rest of the quarter was all Jackets as Matt Seifert scored his first goal of the season off a faceoff and Brooks Baro scored a natural hat trick in less then four minutes of gametime.  Quarles found Rose once more to close the scoring in the quarter with the Jackets leading 7-2.

The Tigers scored off the opening faceoff of the second quarter, opening the frame that would see twelve total goals scored.  The JAckets extended their lead to 10-3 with 12:58 remaining in the quarter.  The Tigers refused to quit and took control of the rest of the quarter by dominating possession and taking advantage of the Jackets relaxing slightly.  The Tigers got to within 11-9 before the Jackets scored the final goal of the first half.

The second half was notably different from the high scoring first half as sloppy play marked the half for both teams.  The Jackets were able string together a few more plays than the Tigers down the stretch and pulled out the 16-11 win.  Peter Zagrobelny stood tall in goal for the Jackets with 20 saves.

The Jackets will face another ranked opponent when the #20 Colorado Buffaloes come to town on Sunday February 11 at 1pm.
